Celeste Ng does it again!

Or, more accurately, she has done it for the first time. This book is her debut novel, but it's the second book of hers that I've read. I was thoroughly impressed with the captivating plot of Little Fires Everywhere, that I checked out this book as soon as I saw it at the library.

The book centers on a mixed Asian/White family living in a small midwestern town. This family, the Lees, have three children. The oldest of the family is Nath, an intelligent boy who carries his grudges heavily. Then, there is Hannah. Hannah is the youngest of the Lees, and the only one who can really seem to grasp just what's going on in their house.

And that, my friend, leaves Lydia.

Lydia was born with her mother's bright blue eyes and the yolk of her parents' dreams placed squarely on her shoulders. She carries both her mother's dream of being a doctor instead of a homemaker, and her father's dream of being the most popular person in school, and having everybody's affection.

And then Lydia is found dead at the bottom of the local lake, and everything is thrown into upheaval.

This book is scary and beautiful and just as captivating as Little Fires Everywhere.
